Applications

The Prairie Region, often working with the Pacific Region, offers a number of courses that you can apply to attend. Please note the deadline by which the applications must be received by the Local office. (Last update: August 28th, 2025)

3-Day Education Seminar

This 3-day education seminar for all Locals within the Prairie Region will be held in Edmonton on November 7th, 8th, and 9th, 2025, at the Holiday Inn Express (10010 104th Street, Edmonton, AB).

The courses being offered are:

Basic Shop Steward
This course aims to provide new Stewards with basic training, knowledge, and confidence. Topics include the different roles of the Steward, how to investigate and file a grievance, communication skills, Shop Steward rights, the Steward as organizer/mobilizer, the key provisions of the Urban Operations and RSMC Collective Agreements.

Solidarity Skills Level 2
This challenging course looks at conflict in the Union and how to deal with it. Participants explore and practice non-violent communication, conflict de-escalation skills, mediation techniques, and conflict resolution methods.

Note: Preference will be given to applicants who have completed Solidarity Skills Level 1.

Temporary Workers & Their Rights
This course provides temporary workers with information about their rights and benefits under the Urban Collective Agreement. The CUPW history section features the long struggle for better working conditions and secure employment for temporary workers. There are also segments on bumping and assignments, the steps to take to get a permanent job, and the pressures facing today’s public postal service. This course is recommended for Group 1 and 2 temporary workers, as well as Stewards and Local Executive members who wish to better represent these members.

Harassment & Violence
This course is intended to raise awareness of CUPW members about what workplace harassment and violence are; the responsibilities of the employer, the union, and individual members in creating an environment free of harassment/violence; how CUPW members can work to prevent and stop harassment/violence; the avenues for redress that members if they are being harassed; and to develop assertiveness skills to deal with harassment/violence.
