Local Dispatch (26/01/28)

Friends and comrades,

In this week’s Dispatch, we are covering the most recent negotiations update, the February GMM, educational opportunities, and upcoming committee meetings.

Before getting to that, I would like to give an extra plug for the upcoming Temporary Workers and Their Rights course. This course is primarily intended for temps, so we would encourage you to apply if you are a temp (particularly in Group 1 and 2) and interested in learning about your rights (such as bumping and becoming permanent) under the Urban Collective Agreement.

If you are interested in applying, you should be able to find applications on your union bulletin board. You can also stop by the office and pick one up, print one from our website, or, for these Local courses, you can also apply online. Please check out the education section of our website HERE.

Solidarity,

Kyle Turner, Communications Officer

Negotiations Update

Our negotiating committees have now finalized the language for Short-Term Disability and personal days. More information about the contract vote should be coming shortly. To read the full bulletin, click HERE.

In order to be eligible to vote on the contract offers, you must be a member in good standing. This means that you’ve signed a membership card and paid $5. If you have not done this, please stop by the Local office or reach out to a Shop Steward and we can make arrangements. If you’re unsure, please reach out to Secretary-Treasurer Karry Biri at Treasurer@cupwedm.net.

February GMM

Our next general membership meeting is scheduled for Saturday, February 7th at 10 am. This is a hybrid meeting, so you can attend in person (18121 107 Ave NW) or online via Zoom. If you wish to attend online, the deadline to register is Friday, February 6th at noon. For more information and to register to attend online, click HERE.

Educational Opportunities

Locally, we are still accepting applications for Temporary Workers and Their Rights (deadline to apply is February 4th, 5 pm) and Social Steward (February 18th, 5 pm).

Labour College, the Canadian Labour Congress’ (CLC) flagship trade union leadership development program, is accepting applications for its next cohort. The goals of this program are to build leadership and provide leadership tools; foster empowerment, self-confidence, and new networks of labour leaders; strengthen critical thinking skills; examine working class struggles and human rights issues that affect all workers; and create change.

The deadline to apply for Labour College is March 2nd, 2026. For more information and for the online application, click HERE.

Upcoming Committee Meetings

The next Education Committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 5th at 7 pm via Zoom. For more information, click HERE.
