Local Dispatch (25/08/20)

Friends and comrades,

In this week’s Dispatch, we are covering the most recent negotiations updates, a message from the Local President regarding temps and personal days, upcoming committee meetings, and the Women’s Equinox.

Before getting to that, I would also like to share that the Social Committee has planned a softball game and picnic for Sunday, September 7th. Check the Social Events section of our webpage HERE. There will be more updates to these details, so if you are interested in attending, please check back.

Solidarity,

Kyle Turner, Communications Officer

Negotiations Updates

After some delays, our negotiation committees met with Canada Post today and presented global offers for both the Urban and RSMC bargaining units. There is a lot of material to review, and details about both offers — including conditionally and partially agreed-to items — can be found HERE.

Message from Local President: Temps Being Paid for Only 3-Hours – We Want to Hear From You!

It’s come to the office’s attention through our Local Shop Stewards and temporary letter carriers that temps who have been called in for daily assignments are only being compensated for 3-hours when they use a Canadian Labour Code sick day or personal day. Let’s talk about why this is wrong and why you should grieve it.

When a temp is called in for work, they need to have an assignment that they are filling. Most of the time, this will be to backfill a relief carrier who is now on a long-term assignment. Temps are not called into a facility to be there just in case.

What the Employer has been saying is that they are calling in temp letter carriers using a specific part of the Collective Agreement to cover uncovered routes. This would be fine if they were calling you on the day to cover an uncovered route. Because they are calling you the day before, this makes the situation different.

It is true that the Labour Code sick days and personal days must be used as whole days. If you had been assigned to a job and used your sick day, you should be paid the full value of the assignment — part-time or full-time. Because the Employer is claiming they are not giving you an assignment, they are only paying the minimum amount of 3-hours.

I also have questions about how these hours are being reported and if they are being reported. Please contact us so we can gather as much information as possible.

Committee Meetings

There are two upcoming committee meetings. The next Women’s Committee meeting is happening on Thursday, August 21st and the next Organizing Committee meeting is happening on Thursday, August 28th. For more details about these meetings, click HERE.

Women’s Equinox

The Women’s Equinox has been planned for the weekend of September 12-14th, 2025. This event is taking place just outside of Red Deer at Camp LG Barnes on Gull Lake (40421 Range Rd 10, Gull Lake, AB  T0C 0J0).

The Local Women’s Committee is able to send 20 members from Edmonton. Cost per member is $20, even for members outside of Edmonton and Calgary. This event is a great opportunity to learn more about women’s health in a warm and welcoming environment with your fellow union sisters and cousins. More details to follow.

If you have questions or concerns, you can contact the Committee at Womenof730@gmail.com.
