Local Dispatch (25/06/20)

Friends and comrades,

There is one big question that is on everyone’s mind. Unfortunately, as of writing this, we have no further information about the CIRB forcing us to vote on the Corporation’s contract offer. Once we get those details, we will send it out over text message, email, and update our website and social media accounts.

In this week’s Dispatch, we are covering the latest negotiations updates, National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the July GMM, and a reminder that you can submit content to our Local’s newsletter!

Finally, we have continued updating the website. We’ve been adding sections and modifying graphics, and we hope it’s feeling functional and that the menus are making sense. If you’ve run into any problems with the site or if you come across something that’s not working, please send me an email at Communications730@gmail.com.

Solidarity,

Kyle Turner, Communications Officer

Negotiations Update

We’re still waiting for the big information to drop about how and when the Canadian Industrial Relations Board will be dealing with our forced vote on the Corporation’s final offer. Our National office is currently waiting for details of a teleconference with the CIRB. To read that full bulletin, click HERE.

Our union has also released a bulletin outlining the Corporation’s plans for the 2028 negotiations period. It’s all cuts and rollbacks. To read the bulletin, click HERE.

In response to this forced vote, our union has started a Vote No campaign. To read that bulletin, click HERE. To read our union’s fact sheet about the Corporation’s latest offer, click HERE.

Our Regional office is also working on collecting video clips of CUPW members sharing reasons about why they will be voting no on the contract offer. For more details and to take part in that campaign, you can see the full poster HERE.

National Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Saturday, June 21st, is National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This is a day to honour the histories, cultures, resistance, and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Turtle Island. You can read the full bulletin from our National office and see the artwork created by Calvin Paul of Rolling River First Nation HERE.

If you are in the Edmonton area, you can find a list of events to celebrate National Indigenous History Month HERE.

July GMM

Our next GMM is scheduled for Saturday, July 5th at 10 am. It is a hybrid meeting, so you can attend in person at the hall (18121 107 Ave NW) or online via Zoom. The deadline to register to attend online is Friday, July 4th at noon. For more information and to register to attend online, click HERE.

There are two further pieces of information for this GMM.

First, the dues assessment committee is planning to have a poll about the special assessment. You can see their poster advertising that HERE.

Second, the position of Health & Safety Officer is up for a floor election at the July GMM. If you are interested in running for this position, you can check our Local By-Laws HERE to see if you meet the requirements. If you would like to run and want your campaign material to appear in the Dispatch and to be sent in the mail-out, please send your material to elections730@gmail.com by June 25th.
