Local Dispatch (25/11/20)

Friends and comrades,

In this week’s Dispatch, we are covering negotiations updates, the December GMM, upcoming committee meetings, the general strike questionnaire, RSMC flyer pay clawbacks, and a message from VP4.

Before getting to that, I would like to acknowledge that November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. This day is designated in order to remember our friends, comrades, and family members that we have lost due to anti-trans bigotry and violence.

Here in Alberta, the United Conservative Party government has introduced multiple bills that target trans youth in particular, preventing certain types of gender-affirming care and requiring that parents be notified when students wish to use different pronouns at school.

The UCP is once again using the notwithstanding clause in order to shield these bills from court challenges, and make it easier to put hurdles in the way of measures that are known to save lives.

Trans rights are human rights.

Solidarity,

Kyle Turner, Communications Officer

Negotiations Updates

On Tuesday, the Corporation had its annual public meeting where it repeated the same message that it has been saying since we started negotiations. The Corporation is changing the delivery standards to 3-7 business days to allow for ground transport instead of air, which CEO Doug Ettinger says the public won’t notice.

Of course, the Corporation also used this meeting to talk about billion dollar losses, but the full Q3 report won’t be released until Friday, November 21st. To read our union’s full bulletin on this, click HERE.

The Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates (OGGO) is still examining the situation at Canada Post. Our union is encouraging all members to email the committee with a short and respectful message about what the post office means to you, why the cuts are wrong, and why we need a public consultation and the protection of our public post office. You can contact the committee at OGGO@parl.gc.ca and you can read the full bulletin HERE.

December GMM

Our next GMM is Saturday, December 6th at 10 am. This is a hybrid meeting, so you can attend at the office (18121 107 Ave NW) or online via Zoom. The deadline to register to attend online is Friday, December 5th by noon. For more information and to register to attend online, click HERE.

Committee Meetings

There are three scheduled committee meetings coming up. The Women’s Committee is meeting today (November 20th) at 4:30 pm at the union office (18121 107 Ave). There is also an Education Committee meeting happening on November 22nd at 9 am and an Organizing Committee meeting happening on November 27th at 7 pm. For more information, click HERE.

General Strike Questionnaire

On October 27th, 2025, the UCP used the notwithstanding clause to end the Alberta Teachers’ Association strike. This is one of many attacks on workers’ rights in recent years, not just in Alberta but across Canada. On October 29th, the Alberta Federation of Labour and its allied unions announced that it would begin working toward toppling the UCP and building up to a general strike.

At our November 1st GMM, our Local voted to support the AFL in these efforts. Are you ready to stand up for workers? Please fill out the following questionnaire. All answers will remain confidential: LINK.
