March 8th marks International Women's Day (IWD), which has its origins in the labour movement in Europe and North America and was spurred on by the suffrage movement. After women gained the right to vote in the Soviet Union in 1917, IWD was made a national holiday. IWD became more widely known in 1977 once it was adopted by the United Nations.
IWD is a day to recognize and celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievement of women, but it's also about bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and gender-based violence.
The theme for IWD 2023 is #EmbraceEquity.
If you are in Edmonton, there is an IWD dinner and discussion happening at the Santa Maria Goretti Centre (11050 90 street). For more information and to purchase tickets to attend, please CLICK HERE.
