CSU 52 Picket Information
Never Cross the Line!
As many of you may have heard our fellow workers at the Civic Service Union (CSU) 52 are set to go on strike. Please find the most recent message from the CSU President HERE.
This is an important moment for all workers in the Edmonton region, regardless of where they work. CUPW 730 supports CSU 52's efforts to achieve a fair contract.
We are asking all of our member to respect the CSU picket lines. Our Union has a strong stance when it comes to picket lines. In fact it is the first policy that we have within the policy section of our constitution:
...the Union shall endorse the principle that "a picket line is a picket line" and shall instruct its members as to trade union principles with respect to honouring picket lines.
How does one honour a picket line? By not crossing it! If you come across a picket line while conducting your duties at Canada Post, you don't have to cross that line. It is not a requirement of your job to put yourself in an unsafe situation. Ask to talk to the picket captain on the line. Explain that you would like to honour their picket line, and ask how they would like you to proceed. If they ask you not to cross the line. Return the mail at the end of day and inform your end of day supervisor that you were unable to deliver the mail due to the CSU strike.
If management gives you any grief over this, talk to a shop steward or give the union office a call.
